Third BRICS Network University conference to be held in South Africa from July 5-7, 2018

South Africa will host the third BRICS Network University conference from Thursday, 5 to Saturday, 7 July 2018. The conference will be organised by the South African Ministry of Higher Education and Training in association with the University of Stellenbosch, at the Van der Sterr Building, University of Stellenbosch. The theme of the conference is “Unlocking BRICS Universities’ Partnerships: Postgraduate Education Opportunities and Challenges”. The aim is to develop and consolidate the BRICS education agenda as well as highlight strategic research areas for BRICS collaboration in order to gain comparative advantage in the global knowledge system.

The conference will be organised around the six thematic areas identified for the BRICS NU, namely: Energy; Computer Science and Information Security; Ecology and Climate Change; Economics; Water Resources and Pollution Treatment; as well as BRICS Studies. The objective is to provide a platform for the BRICS countries, notably, leaders of International Thematic Groups to share research experiences and country specific insights in these knowledge fields, and explore possibilities on how the BRICS cooperation could be leveraged to strengthen scientific knowledge in these areas.

Expected participants include university members of the BRICS Network University, coordinators of International Thematic Groups and heads of BRICS NU International Governing Board, researchers as well as relevant government officials.

The first conference of the BRICS Network University (BRICS NU) was hosted in Russia, Ekaterinburg in April 2016, and it focused predominantly on the conceptual framework and principles shaping the BRICS Network University. The conference also formally constituted membership of the BRICS Network University through the signing of a Protocol by university members.

The second BRICS NU conference was organised by the People’s Republic of China in the Zhengzhou province from 01-03 July 2017 under the theme “Pragmatic Cooperation and International Education”. The conference focused more on the governance structure of the BRICS NU including the finalisation of the statues and related regulatory framework.
