NIT, Warangal  has been nominated to be a participating institution under the BRICS NU programme in the thematic area of Computer Science and Information Security.

About the Institute

National Institute of Technology Warangal (NITW), formerly known as Regional Engineering College, was established in 1959. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone for this institute, the first in the chain of 31 NITs (formerly known as RECs) in the country on October 10, 1959. The Institute, well-known for its dedicated faculty, staff and state-of-the-art infrastructure conducive to a healthy academic environment, is constantly striving to achieve higher levels of technical excellence.  Evolving a socially relevant and internationally acceptable curriculum, implementing innovative and effective teaching methodologies and focussing on the holistic development of the students are the main concerns. The Institute received UNESCO and UK assistance in the past. The World Bank Assistance under TEQIP (during 2004-15) has been a timely help in the overall development of the Institute. NITW is a residential institute with nearly 5000 students in addition to 400 Ph.D Scholars.  It has been consistently ranked among the top fifteen technical institutes in the country. Eminent alumni are the strength of the institute.

 

Location

NIT Warangal is a self-contained residential campus located in a beautiful wooded land of about 248 acres in Warangal city. It is located 140 km from Hyderabad on either side of Hyderabad - Warangal highway at a distance of 3 Kms from Kazipet Railway Station and 12 km from Warangal Railway Station. Warangal enjoys a unique position in the cultural and historical map of the Telangana state. The exquisite and intricate architecture in Ramappa, Thousand Pillar Temple, Bhadrakali Temple and the Warangal Fort have been centres of attraction. Lovely gardens, wild life sanctuaries, lakes and rocks in the vicinity are other places of interest for students and visitors. The place enjoys good cool and dry climate

Governance

NIT Warangal is governed by a Board of Governors, who are representative members from distinguished and reputed academic institutions and from industry appointed by the Government of India, and the Government of Telengana state. The Chairman of the Board is nominated by the Government of India. The Director is the administrative head of the Institute. NIT Act of 2007 and rules laid down by MHRD, Government of India provide the framework of norms by which NIT Warangal functions.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at National Institute of Technology, Warangal  was established in 1991. It offers high quality undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. The department is currently offering the following programme:

Department was recognized as Resource Centre under Information Security Education Awareness (ISEA) programme of Department of Electronics & Information Technology (DeitY), Government of India in the fields of  Education, Training and Research components of  Information security and its allied areas in the year 2015. The department is currently identified three  research  groups Data Engineering, Information Security and  High performance computing. Faculty of CSE are guiding doctoral and Master's students in the areas of Algorithms, Machine Learning, Data Mining, Big Data Analytics, Social Networks, Information and System Security, Privacy, Cryptography, cryptanalysis, Software Engineering, and Wireless Sensor networks.

Thematic Priorities of NIT, Warangal  in the BRICS Network University (BNU):

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India has identified National Institute of  Technology, Warangal  (NITW) as the participating institute in the thematic area of “Computer Science and Information Security (CSIS)”. Hence, Computer Science and Information Security (CSIS) are the thematic priorities of NIT-Warangal  in the BRICS Network University.

1)   Description of the educational programmes offered to BRICS NU:

The Computer Science and Information Security (CSIS) which is offered to BRICS NU is handled by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the National Institute of Technology, Warangal. Graduates from the department are heavily recruited by both academia and industry, and ex-students of the department occupy top positions in both academia and industry all over the world. There is a draft proposal of activities at NIT, Warangal under BNU and the programmes will be made available as and when they are decided. The modalities regarding collaborative procedures that are to be established with respect to BRICS NU are also being decided.

Draft Proposal of Activities at NIT, Warangal  under BNU:

The BNU activities at NITW shall be designed as an umbrella programme which will include various sub-programmes as indicated below:



 

  1. Faculty/Scholar Exchange :

It is proposed to invite faculty members from national level ranked universities in BRICS/R&D organisations/Industry to participate in academic activities of NIT Warangal for a period of two weeks to a semester. During their stay, they will be (i) delivering course lectures; (ii) guiding the research of jointly supervised students; (iii) organizing short term courses; (iv) carry out proposed research agenda in the host institute. Similarly faculty members from the department of CSE, NIT Warangal will be permitted to visit BRICS universities.

  1. Collaborative Research :

Identified thematic areas are Data Engineering, Information Security and High Performance Computing.  It is proposed to conceive funding research projects relevant to the above said thematic areas jointly with BRICS countries. Projects may seek fund from agencies at national and international level.

 

  1. Student Internships :

          It is proposed to send deserving students of NIT Warangal to BRICS universities to enrich their skills, to participate in international conferences, to participate in international and get international exposure. Similarly, students of BRICS universities to make short visits NIT Warangal for academic benefits.

        

4.    Joint Degree Programme:

NIT Warangal with the permission of its Senate would like to offer Degree Programmes jointly with BRICS universities. Such programmes may be of multi-institutional programmes.

 

Conclusion

NIT Warangal is enthusiastic in participating in the recommended initiatives of BRICS universities. NIT Warangal would like to enrich its academic strength with international collaborative activities through this noble initiative and also to make sincere efforts to achieve objectives set by Government of India.
