Ural Federal University (UrFU) is one of the largest universities in Russia bringing together fundamental education and an innovative approach towards the challenges of modern times. 1. MA Programme in Russian Studies

Degree: Master of Arts in Russian Studies

Program credits: 120 ECTS

Program Duration: 2 years, full-time

Language of Instruction: English

Our Master’s Degree programme in Russian Studies covers various aspects of Russia’s past and present: language, culture, political and social life. The key issues are identity, modernity and integration in the broader cultural context of Post-Soviet Eurasia, as well as intensive study of Russian language. We provide the courses for those who would like to start a career in exhibition business and tourism, mass-media, social centers, cultural foundations or diplomatic agencies.

A). Identity: defining Russia’s uniqueness

This topic is primarily about the key Russian identity features, including historical and cultural heritage of the country. These courses give you an idea of the present-day variety of Russian identities (course examples: Historical Anthropology of Russia, Russian and Soviet Cinema, Russian Political Thought, Tradition and Memory in Post-Soviet Countries).

B). Modernity: Russia’s place in the changing world

This topic encourages you to take a more critical approach to the experience of the past. These courses focus on the issues of development and change in the social and political life of modern Russia, while providing a global comparative prospective (course examples: The Concepts of Modernity, Art and Literature in Modern Russia, Social Features of a Post-Soviet City, Speech Practices in Modern Russian Language, Post-Soviet Economy).

C). Integration: the architecture of post-soviet space

This topic is focused mostly on the transnational integration in post-soviet Eurasia. Diplomacy, collaboration, security and environmental issues - all these questions are raised within the ‘integration’ topic (course examples: Social and Economical Geography, International Security and Collaboration, Cross- Cultural Communications).

D). Russian language

Studying Russian language is, of course, an obligatory condition for training of any specialist in Russian Studies. Our Master’s Degree programme offers a possibility for perfecting your fluency in Russian with three different teaching courses and tutorials.

2. BRICS Countries in a Globalizing World

Degree: Master of Arts in Foreign Area Studies

BRICS is one of the most interesting groups of nations in contemporary world. It attracts great attention of experts, scholars and even ordinary people. Is it really an alternative way of civilization? What can we say about challenges of BRICS? This MA programme is prepared within the framework of the BRICS Global Education Initiative. It is devoted to different aspects of cooperation within BRICS. 

The programme combines a problem and a systematic approach, the presentation of educational material is built on the theoretical and problem-chronological order. The organizational structure of the programme is designed as a combination of lectures and seminars, independent of the implementation of individual and group practical tasks. The purpose of seminars is a detailed study of sources, some significant events, the development of appropriate professional skills. Along with oral presentations in the form of reports of students are expected to participate in the work in small groups, perform creative tasks, participate in discussions and round tables. It is important to get skills in comparative studies, defending own viewpoint and taking a critical approach to all resources of information on BRICS countries in globalizing world. Programme graduates are prepared to be employed at government-run and private enterprises, including bodies of state administration and intergovernmental organizations, as well as in financial sphere, in energy companies, in industry, trade, and transportation companies of BRICS countries as well as at centers of academic research.

1. BA in International Economics and Business

Degree: Bachelor in Economics

Duration: 4 years

Language of instruction: Russian (1-2 year)/English(3-4 year)

Credits: 240 ECTS

The programme is aimed at the students who are ready to build their future career in large Russian and international companies actively involved in international business. Special features of the programme include English learning throughout the entire period of study, as well as more than 20 courses taught in English.

In 2015 the programme International Economics and Business was first among the programmes outside Moscow and St. Petersburg to receive EPAS accreditation by EFMD (European Foundation for Management Development). This accreditation confirms that the programme meets international standards of business education and confers greater credibility on its graduate’s degree. For European universities, as well as for many foreign employers international accreditation is a sign confirming the graduate’s professional qualification.The curriculum of the programme includes both strong theoretical basis and a considerable number of practice-oriented courses. Leading foreign scholars in economics and management, representatives of international partner companies are engaged in teaching. The students of the programme are offered ample opportunities to participate in exchange programmes with foreign partner universities, as well as internships in international corporations — partners of GSEM and public authorities of the Sverdlovsk region. The graduates of the programme are becoming more and more attractive for both Russian employers engaged in international activities and foreign companies. Having the competences in the field of legal regulations of international trade, organisation and modelling of international commodity and financial flows, our graduates get significant competitive advantages in the labour market.

2. International Economics and Trade

Increasing international trade in the emerging markets of BRICS is opening up new opportunities for growth of firms, regions and countries. Simultaneously, it is posing new institutional and cultural challenges as the benefits will not be equally distributed and competition is mounting. Strategies of governments and firms need to be constantly aligned to quickly adapt to changing circumstances. Students will learn the methodology to analyse the complex relationships between firm behaviour and economic growth in regions and countries, as well as how to integrate social responsibility in linking BRICS businesses.

The skills of global analytics with extensive knowledge of cross-cultural, strategic, international management; econometric advanced techniques; value and social responsibility will be acquired; you will learn to recognise the forces that shape geographical patterns of economic activity. This not limited list of disciplines will help to advise firms and governments on how to reap the benefits of globalisation and international value chains in BRICS. 3. Financial and Applied Economics (Double Degree Programme)

Degree: Master in Economics (Russian) +  MSc in Economics and Management Science (MEMS).

Programme duration: 2 years

Language of instruction: Russian, Several courses are taught in English

Credits: 120 ECTS

The double degree programme is implemented jointly with  Humboldt-Universität Berlin
The dual degree program prepares students for leading positions in international business, public administration and research. It covers advanced economics, finance and quantitative methods according to high international standards.

The primary emphasis of the program is on teaching quantitative methods of economic analysis, applied to Advanced Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, Industrial Organization, Public Economics, Banking and Finance. Several courses are taught in English, including courses taught by visiting professors from European universities.

After one year at the Ural Federal University students spend two semesters in Berlin, where teaching is in English (and optionally in German). Participants need a good knowledge of English and a good background in mathematics. Only candidates with an outstanding academic potential will be admitted for  Humboldt-Universität in Berlin MEMS programme.

On successful completion students are awarded the degree MSc in Economics and Management Science (MEMS) from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. In addition, they obtain the Master’s Degree in Economics from the Ural Federal University.

4. International e-Business

Degree: Master in Business Informatics

Duration: 2 years

Credits: 120 ECTS

Language of Instruction: English

The programme is aimed at training specialists with deep knowledge in the field of economics and information technology, capable of solving practical problems of e-business with specific international activities.
Students of the programme obtain practical skills in management of e-business with specific international activities, development of the architecture of the enterprise. Students also have the opportunity to spend an exchange semester at Varna University of Economics, Bulgaria (30 ECTS), as well as obtain a dual degree (Ural Federal University + Varna University of Economics). Internship of the programme is conducted at IT-departments of banks, insurance companies, etc.

5. IT Innovations in Business

Degree: Master in Applied Informatics

Duration: 2 years

Language of instruction: English

The programme is aimed at training specialists with in-depth knowledge in the development of automation and informatisation of business processes for managing an electronic company, the implementation of IT innovations in business.

Students of the programme obtain practical skills in development of projects of automation and informatisation of business processes, e-business supported by in-depth theoretical training. Students also have the opportunity to spend an exchange semester at Varna University of Economics, Bulgaria (30 ECTS), as well as earn a dual degree (Ural Federal University + Varna University of Economics). Internships of the programme are conducted at IT-departments of banks, insurance companies, etc.

6. Global Energy Business

Degree: Master in Management

Programme duration: 2 years

Language of instruction: English

Credits: 120 ECTS

The programme is aimed at training highly qualified professionals for employment in global and domestic energy markets, overhaul projects in power generation based on cutting-edge innovative technologies, in engineering, analysis and research requiring broad vision and unconventional interdisciplinary approaches.

The emphasis is put on advanced teaching methods that build competency to act ahead amid uncertainty and risk in the external environment. Field trips to innovative power production facilities operated by Russian companies are organised for the students.

Professional internship (10 ECTS) is foreseen at Ekaterinburg Electric Grid Company, Interregional Distributive Grid Company of Urals and other companies.

7. International Management (Double Degree Programme)

The double degree programme is implemented jointly with IAE Lille 1

Degree: Master in Management (Russian) + Master Commerce International (French)

Programme duration: 2 years

Language of instruction: English and Russian

Credits: 120 ECTS

The goal of the programme is to train highly qualified managers for fast-growing Russian and international companies, as well as researchers in modern management with analytical, leadership and teamwork skills.

The programme offers the whole spectrum of management fields in international context: strategic management, HR management, marketing, logistics, financial management and accounting and legal basis of entrepreneurship. For the entire duration of the programme students learn English or French.
Several courses are taught in English, including courses taught by visiting professors from Lille 1 University and other European universities.

Upon successful completion of the International Management programme graduates receive Russian state-recognised diploma and degree Master in Management, as well as degree Master Commerce International of Lille 1 University (France).
