The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ has three campi: Cidade Universitária, Praia Vermelha and Macaé, comprising institutes, schools, faculties and supplementary units, which include seven museums, among which we can highlight the National Museum, eight university hospitals, and the third largest ocean basin in the world for research on offshore oil exploration.


National and internationally recognized by the high quality of teaching as well as by its commitment to research, the UFRJ is the quintessential higher education institution of its region, leading in every international ranking, such as QS and Times Higher Education. The UFRJ has 41 libraries, in which the students can access books, monographs, thesis and dissertations, rare and old books, among others. All bibliographic material of the university can be looked for on the Minerva Database, through the website


Most academic unities of the UFRJ are equipped with informatics laboratories, providing free access to the internet, besides having free Wi-Fi hotspots.


Some academic units of the UFRJ have an academic center, which is a student’s body that represents their interest inside the university. The academic centers promote debates, thematic weeks, freshmen receptions and organize political actions among the students, besides hosting cultural activities, such as book fairs and parties.






The project establishes as academic framework the evaluation of the hydrometeorological and environmental behavior in the highlands of the state of Rio de Janeiro, covering urban, agricultural and forested regions, based on the consolidation of the knowledge of hydrological studies developed in Brazil for various national river basins. We emphasize the use of remote sensing in conjunction with computational numerical models, with a view to the development and evaluation of methodologies and hydrometeorological and atmospheric parameterizations in the river basin scale. Additionally, it is argued that it is essential to articulate obtaining basic field data from in situ monitoring and remote sensing technologies, enabling multidisciplinary studies on modeling of water resources, with emphasis on the physical aspects of the understanding of the hydrological cycle and evaluation of climate change. This perspective is integrated with a social vision of the physical system of the basin, so that provide updated information to society.    


     For this project, the following objectives were highlighted:

·         develop and implement models that address hydrometeorological phenomena of surface hydrology and groundwater hydrology in order to forecast streamflows and water level during critical events (flood and drought) in river basins;

·         evaluate the use of remote sensing technology in monitoring surface and groundwater flows;

·         study methodological approaches for determining areas subject to flooding and monitoring of soil moisture using remote sensing, geophysics and global positioning;

·         build a geographical information system with a single base map at the river basin scale, which allows to perform hydrometeorological modeling by integrating different sources of data.




The broad base of scientific expertise of the project are: (i) the strong integration between experiments intensive and continuous monitoring and computer modeling mathematical and analytical to the solution of environmental problems, (ii) the interdisciplinary and inter-institutional collaboration, (iii) the Strong integration with the graduate, post-graduate strictest sense and post-graduate latu sense, (iv) scientific-technological projects for the extension.

To address effectively the multidisciplinary theme that the management of water resources and environment demand, we believe that it is necessary the use of a variety of approaches involving the following areas:

  • the acquisition and interpretation of data and information on the physical processes and geoenvironmental characteristics on the water cycle at scales compatible with the unit of analysis;
  • the understanding of the relationship between the space-time scales of natural observation and modeling of hydrometeorological phenomena;
  • the understanding of the functioning and performance of basins of different geomorphological features as well as various forms of human occupation;
  • the consideration of biogeochemical flows associated with the water cycle.

Within this very broad vision, were identified as scientific issues that receive priority attention, namely: (i) global climate change and its regional effects, (ii) hydrology and meteorology of mesoscale, (iii) surface-atmosphere interactions, micrometeorology and hydrology of the vadose zone, iv) the quality of water, air and soil and (v) management of water resources.

These questions were structured in thematic areas of research. The subjects of research will organize information in different scales on a slightly different perspective of the various issues associated with the production of hydrometeorologic information compatible with the formulations of conceptual modeling platforms and with the scales of basins.

Accordingly, the research focuses its attention on 5 thematic areas of research, as follows:

  • Area 1 - Integrated management of water resources in river basins, with the tools to support the platforms of computer modeling
  • Area 2 – Spatial Hydrology and remote sensing as a new source of data for computer modeling platforms
  • Area 3 --Atmospheric and hydrological modeling and water quality modeling
  • Area 4 - Impacts and vulnerability;
  • Area 5 - Information technology integrated with digital mapping systems applied to water resources management.







The main objective of the Civil Engineering Programme (PEC) is to develop high level research, graduating masters and doctors in strategic areas for national scientific and technological development.  PEC has an important role since its creation (45 years ago) in the development of new programs and graduation centers, besides the qualification of university professors throughout the country. PEC is well inserted in the international academic world, as shown through numerous cooperation agreements with several universities abroad encouraging student participation on sandwich doctoral degrees and joint research projects. Though academically devoted, PEC keeps strong links with outside partners from industry, government departments and public administration through participation in different R&D projects. This participation is accomplished through counsel projects and technical services always fulfilled based on the COPPE- COPPETEC Foundation model. These activities fit under an institutional model of cooperation between the university and external partners, which allows PEC to achieve almost 45 years of experience developing activities of research and professional qualification.
