On April 7-8, 2016 the First International Forum of the BRICS Network University has been held at Ural Federal University, Ekaterinburg. The Centre of the BRICS Studies provided organizational and intellectual support for the event.
44 universities from all BRICS countries gathered in the Urals to start real collaboration within the frames of the most ambitious BRICS project in the sphere of education and research. These universities were chosen by the national ministries of education to join the network. In result one of the most extensive university consortia was formed. The Forum started with the opening plenary, during which representatives of the national ministries of education presented chosen universities as well as discussed some specificities of the national systems of education. The presentations can be found below.
The Forum focused upon the following three main tasks. First of all, for the first time six international thematic groups of the BRICS network university gathered to discuss substantial issues of the university collaboration in the main knowledge priority fields, envisaged by the Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of the BRICS network university. These fields are: economics, BRICS studies, ecology and climate change, water resources and pollution treatment, computer science and information security, and energy. The groups worked out detailed plans for the elaboration of the joint curricula in the priority areas. Final presentations of the groups’ moderators can be downloaded from below.
Secondly, during the Forum the International Governing Board (IGB) gathered to discuss some pressing issues of the establishment of the BRICS Network University. In particular, logo and elements of corporate style have been approved, and the IGB regulations were thoroughly discussed. The final approved text of the IGB regulations can be downloaded from below.
Thirdly, after the Forum representatives of the universities signed a special protocol to the Memorandum of Understanding on establishment of the BRICS Network University. The protocol, being an integral part of the Memorandum declares full commitment of the participant universities to the values, tasks and ideas of the BRICS network university as well as recognition of the authority of the main governing bodies of the BRICS Network University.
The days of the Forum were packed with bilateral and multilateral meetings, negotiations and discussions. Beyond any doubt, the Forum opened totally new page in BRICS collaboration in education and research.
