BRICS senior officials meeting in education recognized BRICS NU to be the main BRICS forum for collaboration in education

On July 4th, 2017, a meeting of the senior officials of the BRICS countries’ Ministries of Education took place in Beijing. The meeting was devoted to the issues of quality assurance and accessibility of education, as well as organization of cooperation between the BRICS countries in the area of education. The leaders of the national delegations were: Prof. M. Khomyakov, Vice-Rector for International Relations of Ural Federal University (Russia); Mr. K.K. Sharma, Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of HRD, Government of India  (India); Mr. Tian Xuejun, Vice-Minister of Education (China); and Dr. Diane Parker, Deputy Director General of the Department of Higher Education and Training of the Ministry of Education (South Africa). Brazil was represented by the Brazilian Embassy.  

In the morning session, after the opening talks of the delegationsleaders, the parties discussed the text of the Beijing Declaration of the BRICS Ministers of Education (ГИПЕРССЫЛКА). The discussion focused on the organization of large-scale university cooperation in the framework of the BRICS Network University, cooperation in distance education and e-learning, technical and vocational education (TVET), organization of youth camps and summer/winter schools. All proposals were included in the Beijing Declaration.

The second half of the day was devoted to the thematic discussions on approaches to promoting education equity (moderated by Brazil), approaches to increasing education quality (moderated by Russia), education collaboration among BRICS (moderated by India), and mechanism of the maximizing the visibility of educational collaboration in BRICS (moderated by South Africa). 


The discussions led to the expressed common conviction of the necessity of using BRICS Network University platform for the implementation of joint projects on education, science and innovation. The speakers also emphasized the role the Network University plays in increasing visibility of the educational systems of the BRICS countries.
