The conference is devoted to discussion of the idea of the BRICS as an alternative (not necessarily a rival) to other various international organizations and institutions of global governance. Arguably establishment of the New Development Bank is one of the attempts to implement this alternative vision. In terms of philosophy, this vision entails a new understanding of what development means and requires; in terms of politics, it calls for the establishment of new international institutions.
Does it require anything new in terms of higher education as well? What, for example, are or should be relations of the BRICS universities and of their associations to the game of the international academic rankings, which is so popular today in the mainstream of the neo-liberal western Academia? Do BRICS countries have any common (alternative) agenda in education and research? What should be the role of the new concept of the development in new joint BRICS projects, such as BRICS Network University, BRICS University League or the BRICS network of the research centers of excellence?
We expect the conference to be attended by the experts in higher education, in organization of the research as well as by the representatives of the nascent field of the BRICS studies from all five BRICS countries. A meeting of the International Thematic Group in BRICS studies of the BRICS Network University will be held during the seminar.
The organizer of the seminar is BRICS studies Centre at Ural Federal University, Ekaterinburg, Russia.
Chosen papers will be published at InBRICS newsletter of the UrFU BRICS Studies Centre. We aim, however, at elaboration of a large international research project, the results of which can be published in several special issues of the peer-review journals or as an edited volume.
